Dirty coffee latte is a trendy coffee drink with a really pretty look: cold, rich milk sits at the bottom, then hot espresso is poured on top until it forms that signature streaky brown-and-white gradient. Once stirred, the sweetness of the milk and the bitterness of the still-warm espresso blend into one sip that instantly wakes you up. Perfect for anyone who loves coffee but also wants that aesthetic visual moment worth photographing before drinking.

  • 60 ml (2 shots) fresh espresso
  • 150 ml cold full-cream milk
  • 3 tbsp sweetened condensed milk (white)
  • to taste ice cubes
  • 1-2 tbsp liquid sugar or simple syrup (optional, to taste)
  • 2 tbsp espresso powder or strong black coffee (if you don't have an espresso machine)
  • 60 ml hot water (for manually brewing the coffee)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1 Prepare a tall, clear glass so the streaky 'dirty' effect really shows. Fill the glass to the top with ice cubes.
  2. 2 Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the bottom of the glass, then add liquid sugar if you'd like it sweeter. Stir briefly until the condensed milk dissolves slightly.
  3. 3 Slowly pour the cold milk on top until the glass is about 3/4 full. Don't stir yet—let the milk layer stay at the bottom.
  4. 4 Brew the espresso: if you have an espresso machine, pull 2 shots (60ml) until you get a thick crema. If you don't have a machine, brew 2 tbsp of finely ground robusta/arabica coffee with 60ml hot water, stir well, and strain to make it as strong as possible.
  5. 5 While the espresso is still hot and has crema, slowly pour it over the surface of the milk from a height of about 2-4 inches. Pour at one central point in the glass so it forms a beautiful brown streaky pattern flowing downward.
  6. 6 Don't stir before serving so the gradient look stays visible. Serve immediately with a straw, and let the person drinking it stir it themselves right before sipping so the sweet and bitter flavors blend perfectly.

💡 Tips

• Use espresso that's really hot and freshly brewed so the 'dirty' streaky effect forms perfectly before mixing with the cold milk.

• Pour the espresso slowly, right in the center of the milk's surface, not at the edge of the glass, so the gradient pattern stays neat and doesn't mix in right away.

• If you don't have an espresso machine, use tubruk-style coffee (traditional boiled coffee) brewed very strong and finely strained so no grounds disturb the texture.

• Adjust the amount of sweetened condensed milk to taste; use less if you want a more dominant coffee flavor that's not too sweet.
