Kue mendut, a beautiful Javanese treat wrapped in banana leaves shaped like little boats! Soft white sticky rice dough is filled with a sweet mung bean paste, wrapped in triangular banana leaf parcels, and steamed. It's smoother than klepon and more elegant than onde-onde — a graceful Javanese festive treat.

  • Dough: 200g white glutinous rice flour
  • 150ml warm coconut milk
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Pandan green or purple sweet potato food coloring (optional)
  • Mung bean filling: 150g peeled split mung beans, soaked 2 hours
  • 75g granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 leaf pandan leaf
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • Coconut sauce: 200ml thick coconut milk
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 leaf pandan leaf
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • Young banana leaves, for wrapping

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1 Filling: steam the mung beans until very tender, then mash together with the sugar, salt, and pandan leaf.
  2. 2 Cook in a pan, stirring, until the mixture holds together well; add the grated coconut, let cool, then shape into small oval pieces.
  3. 3 Dough: mix the glutinous rice flour, salt, and warm coconut milk, then knead until smooth and pliable.
  4. 4 Divide the dough and add coloring if you like.
  5. 5 Sauce: cook all the sauce ingredients together, stirring, until slightly thickened.
  6. 6 Take a piece of banana leaf, place 1 tbsp of the sticky rice dough on it, and flatten it.
  7. 7 Add the mung bean filling, then wrap and seal the leaf into a triangle or boat shape.
  8. 8 Steam all the mendut for 20-25 minutes.
  9. 9 Remove from the steamer, open the wrapping slightly, and pour the warm coconut sauce over the top.
  10. 10 Serve warm with extra coconut sauce.

💡 Tips

• The mung bean filling needs to hold together perfectly so it doesn't turn watery during steaming

• Pliable young banana leaves are easier to shape and less likely to tear

• The savory coconut sauce poured on top is what sets mendut apart from other sticky rice cakes
