Putri salju is a classic Lebaran (Eid) cookie shaped like a small crescent moon or a little ball, coated all over in powdered sugar so it looks just like snow. It has a crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a sweet, slightly savory flavor from the cheese or cashews mixed into the dough. The name "putri salju" (literally "snow princess") comes from its snow-white appearance, even though tropical Indonesia never actually sees snow. This cookie is usually a favorite among kids since it isn't overly sweet and has such a cute shape. The main ingredients are butter, flour, grated cheese or chopped cashews, and powdered sugar. It's also quicker and easier to make than nastar (pineapple tarts). Putri salju pairs wonderfully with a warm cup of tea or coffee when visiting family and friends. To make sure the powdered sugar sticks perfectly, the cookies need to be completely cool before coating.

  • butter
  • powdered sugar
  • eggs
  • low-protein all-purpose flour
  • cornstarch
  • finely grated cheddar cheese (or chopped cashews)
  • Coating: 150g powdered sugar + 2 tbsp powdered milk

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1 Beat the butter and powdered sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks and beat until well combined. Add the flour, cornstarch, and grated cheese, then fold with a spatula until evenly mixed. Roll the dough into small balls or shape into crescents. Arrange on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 150°C (300°F) for 20-25 minutes, until cooked through but not browned. Let cool completely. Mix the powdered sugar and powdered milk together. Roll the cookies in the sugar mixture until fully coated in white. Store in an airtight container.

💡 Tips

• Make sure the cookies are completely cool before coating them in sugar so the sugar doesn't melt

• Store with wax paper between the layers

• These cookies don't keep well in humid conditions.
