👩🍳 Instructions
- 1 If using frozen tteok, soak it in warm water for 10-15 minutes until soft and no longer hard, then drain.
- 2 Cut the fish cake into triangles or squares, slice the onion lengthwise, and cut the green onions into 3 cm (about 1-inch) pieces.
- 3 Bring the fish/anchovy stock to a boil in a flat pot or large skillet over medium heat.
- 4 Add the gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, and minced garlic to the boiling water. Stir well until the seasonings are fully dissolved.
- 5 Add the onion and fish cake, and cook for 3-4 minutes until the onion softens slightly.
- 6 Add the tteok, stirring gently so the pieces don't stick together. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
- 7 Continue cooking for 10-12 minutes until the sauce thickens and the tteok becomes soft and chewy, adding a little water occasionally if the sauce gets too thick before the tteok is fully cooked.
- 8 Add the green onions and hard-boiled eggs (if using), cook for 2 more minutes, then turn off the heat.
- 9 Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top and serve the tteokbokki while warm.
💡 Tips
• If you can't find gochujang, look in the Asian ingredients section of a large supermarket or check online stores, since it's the key to tteokbokki's authentic flavor.
• Make sure the fish cake you use is halal-certified, since many imported Korean products aren't guaranteed to be halal.
• Soak the tteok a bit longer if it's still firm, so the final texture turns out perfectly chewy rather than tough.
• For a creamier version, sprinkle some shredded mozzarella cheese on top before serving (a halal-friendly take on rose tteokbokki).
