Fragrant turmeric and coconut milk rice, served complete with all the side dishes! A traditional dish for selamatan (thanksgiving ceremonies), syukuran (gratitude feasts), and tumpeng (cone-shaped rice centerpieces). But it's also great for everyday meals since it's so easy to make.

- 400g rice, washed clean
- 400ml coconut milk
- 100ml water
- 2 tsp turmeric powder, or 3cm fresh turmeric, grated
- 2 leaves bay leaves (daun salam)
- 2 stalks lemongrass stalks, bruised
- 3cm galangal, bruised
- 2 leaves kaffir lime leaves
- 1 tsp salt
- For serving: sliced fried egg omelet
- fried chicken with serundeng (spiced toasted coconut)
- potato perkedel (fried potato patties)
- tempe orek (sweet fried tempeh)
- sambal goreng kentang (spicy fried potatoes)
- sliced cucumber
- shrimp crackers (kerupuk udang)
- lettuce leaves

👩🍳 Instructions
- 1 Combine the rice, coconut milk, water, turmeric, and salt in a rice cooker or pot
- 2 Add the bay leaves, lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves
- 3 Cook as you would regular rice
- 4 If using a pot: bring to a boil, lower the heat, and cover tightly for 20 minutes
- 5 Once cooked, let it rest for 10 minutes, then gently fluff with a fork
- 6 Remove the bay leaves, lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves
- 7 Prepare the side dishes: fry the chicken, make the sliced omelet, perkedel, etc.
- 8 For a tumpeng: mold the rice in a cone-shaped container
- 9 For everyday meals: scoop the turmeric rice onto a plate
- 10 Arrange all the side dishes around the rice
- 11 Garnish with sliced cucumber and lettuce leaves
💡 Tips
• Use thick coconut milk so the turmeric rice turns out soft, fluffy, and fragrant
• Fresh turmeric is more aromatic than powder, but powder is more convenient
• Turmeric rice is great for meal prep — it reheats well and still tastes delicious
